Reducing Mental Stress

Mental stress typically is just a fact of life.  Everyone faces traffic jams, not enough time to get everything done, and balance your career and family life.  Some stresses may never go away no matter what you do.  Stress is a part of the culture we live in.  Sometimes stress can motivate you to do better at your job, work harder toward your goal, and helps you meet those deadlines.

You may get rid of some of your stressors by changing a few things.  If you are easily stressed because of traffic tie-ups, you may find an alternate route or leave for work a few minutes earlier.  If you are feeling job stress, you might want to consider putting in for a transfer or looking for a new job.  Working to patch up the relationship can reduce the mental stress of feuding with a family member.  Stress of any type can be destructive.  Mental stress could turn into a chronic condition that will sap your energy as well as harm your emotions.

Mental stress can be treated in the same way as physical stress.  Breathing exercise can help reduce stress.  Take a deep breath while sitting or lying down with your legs uncrossed.  Inhale on the count of ten, breathing from your diaphragm and not the lungs.  Hold that breath, and then slowly breathe out to the count of ten.  Repeat this five to six times at least one time daily.

Give your body the exercise it needs.  It is a great way to reduce stress and will help in controlling your weight.  Replace all of your negative thoughts with positive thoughts.  Every time you think of a negative thought, erase it from your mind and replace it with a happy thought that makes you smile.  Memorize a poem or quote that is positive, or say a prayer of thanksgiving for the blessings you have.

If you are feeling stressed, that may be a good sign that it is time for a change.  Change of jobs, lifestyle changes, or changing relationships.  If you feel you can’t do that alone, find a support group.  Knowing that other people have been in or are going through the same situation can give you hope that the stressful situation can get better.

Talk to someone!  If you don’t feel comfortable in a group setting, find a close friend, talk to your minister, or find a therapist.  It is important to vent the feelings and emotions you are feeling in an atmosphere where you feel safe.

Add positive activities to your life.  If you love to read, but have trouble finding the time.  Take twenty minutes a day to read for fun.  You can squeeze it in at the beginning of the day, or use the moments before you go to bed.  You will sleep better if you have allowed your body to relax from the pressure of the day.

Writing in a journal will help you vent some of your emotions.  It may also be the start of a new career.  Listen to music, go for a walk, take dancing lessons, or start a hobby.  Finding a new way to cope with mental stress will be easy if you are willing to make a few changes in your life.
