Managing Stress In The Workplace When You Are The Manager: Ridding Of Workplace Worries
Companies worldwide are giving lip service to stress reduction in the workplace. While saying that, they are putting intense pressure on employees to meet goals, reduce sick time, and increase productivity. While talking about reducing stress on-the-job, they are still doing things that create stress and tension for employees. Stress management experts believe companies should take the lead in helping reduce the stress in employee’s life. Treating employee stress can give many benefits for companies.
If you are a manager you are caught between the need to produce for the company and the need of the employees for stress release. An employee has the choice to go to the Human Resources department to ask for help in work-related stress. What if you are a manager that an employee comes to with work stress problems? It is estimated to cost companies millions of dollars in worker’s compensation for stress-related claims.
As a manager you need to set up a close network of friends at work, home, and in your social life so you are able to manage your stress. If you are stressed you will find your employees or team members will pick up on your stress and become more stressed. As a manager, be sure you get the proper amount of sleep, eat a healthy diet, and keep your life balanced.
Talk to the company in behalf of the employees. Suggest ways of reducing stress for employees and assuring them productivity will increase if stress is reduced. Stress management programs are effective in reducing employee illness and absenteeism because of work-related stress. Companies who have encouraged their employees to get more physical exercise and encourage them to take breaks. Many employees will feel pressured to work through lunch and other breaks. That may increase stress and cause even more problems.
Managers can come to work with a positive attitude and manage effectively with positive reinforcement. Employees will respond to a manager if they realize the manager is working to ease the stress on-the-job. Plan team events, reward good performance, and liberally dish out encouragement. Recognize outstanding employees and if there is a problem to be addressed, talk to the individual and don’t blast the whole group! The morale of the group will drop and stress levels will increase. Encourage open communication between employees and management.
